Dr. Norman Borlaug has died.

Scientist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Norman Borlaug has died at age 95.  I find it incredibly depressing that this isn’t front-page news everywhere right now, especially after the news-mania Michael Jackson’s death caused.  Although I’m sure a lot of you don’t know who this is.

To put it simply, Dr. Normal Borlaug is credited with saving the lives of 1 billion people. That’s right, a billion. When the world was facing an epic hunger crisis in the 60s the scale of which we had never seen before, it was Dr. Borlaug’s work in agricultural science that allowed for higher-yielding, disease resistant crops to be developed and brought to struggling countries around the world.  It was because of him that food production in countries with high starvation rates quadrupled.

He is, in terms of numbers, one of the most important and influential people who ever lived.

Well, thanks Dr. Borlaug.

Hmm… let’s think about this. Michael Jackson, a pop singer, dancer, kinda creepy looking possible child molester dies, and everyone acts like he’s a shining golden Messiah. Norman Borlaug, a hero who saved a billion people by increasing crop production in starving countries dies, and the only way I hear about it is from here. There’s something seriously screwed up with the world.

Maybe if this “doctor” had any real gift, like being pretty or having a good range, we’d have some reason to care about his death.

I don’t know what kind of public person he was, but not gaining massive media recognition doesn’t really take anything away from his deeds. His work wasn’t focused to the US/Europe, thus the lack of QQ from those regions.

I’m concerned about this America, Jason. I think the problem is that the media controls the minds of most people.

    in a sense…

I can’t believe no one has heard of his death. I don’t like people.
Including Miachael Jackson. I feel bad I didn’t know who this guy was. Sorry, Jason.

Ever since I heard of him a few years ago from Penn & Teller’s Bull…! I have been a fond admirer. I regularly tell people about Borlaug and how it’s interesting to me who we usually idolize in our culture while the true heroes go unnoticed.

Thanks Jason for posting this. You truly are awesome and so was Dr. Borlaug.
